about

So, 8 tracks, 25 minutes in total – put it this way, these boys don’t believe in taking their time to get to the point. Wham, bam thank you fella – in and out before you can draw breath. What we have here is a band adept at creating a crackling, fizzing intensity – you’ll be reminded of where their wellspring is, but you’ll love the sleek, astonishingly tight songs which sit perfectly in 2021, yet taking inspiration from a heritage worthy of rediscovery. You’ll be reminded of the brilliant simplicity of the Ramones here, the tricksy sophistication of Mott The Hoople and Roxy Music there, the boot-stomp of the Sweet and the silky sinuousness of T Rex, the attitude of the New York Dolls and the weight of prime Motley Crue. Actually it does Lixx a dis-service to name-check their influences as there’s a muscularity and a song-writing nous which places them in a unique spot – Lixx have an individual sound; Jo’s gravel-inflected voice, Nazz’s inventive and catchy as fuck guitar work, and the solidity of Robin on bass and Steevo on drums, holding down that bottom end superbly as the tracks tumble by in a blaze of riffs and rock n roll attitude.

However, don’t be sat there thinking ‘oh right, another bunch of sleazemongers looking for one last ride on the eye-liner express’. No sir, these gentlemen are of the moment, are right for these dark and troubling times, a tonic to inspire all troopers. There’s a depth to their craft as songwriters – take track 5 ‘Hollow Tree’ – lyrically intriguing with a Bad Seeds swagger, a minor-key masterpiece that sits very comfortably alongside the rocket-launch of ‘Zero Zero’ and the sub-2 minute rumble of the breakneck ‘Revved Up’. Then there’s the snake-hipped charm of ‘Star Shaped Hole’ – a massive chorus and you can hear Marc Bolan being channelled in the verse. ‘Frustrated’ is a song which you’ll sing all day long after just one listen, ‘It’s So You’ and ‘Kicks & Thrills’ cunningly serves up the feel and the sheer joy of the best of Mott and Roxy without descending into pastiche.

The refreshing thing about V8 is that it’s a celebratory collection – big choruses, enough melody and muscle to hang your jacket on, but with that special something that makes them sound relevant, makes them sound urgent, makes them sound… proper. Go, investigate
